ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine practised over thousands of years that focuses on the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It aims to restore physical and emotional well-being to each patient at any age. The approach is holistic and individual, and no two treatments are the same.

Chinese medicine practitioners recognise that, every physical ailment is caused by an energy imbalance within the body and that in good health, this energy –  ‘Qi’ – flows continuously and smoothly around the channels (meridians) of the body. The Qi can be accessed via acupuncture points and needles are used to connect with and fine-tune the Qi travelling along the channels of your body via specific points on each channel to yield different results.

A scientific explanation may be that needling the points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain, to reduce our experience of pain and influence the body’s own internal regulating system.

Treatment focuses on the root of your symptoms

Following a bespoke diagnosis, fine, sterile, needles are carefully and gently inserted into the skin. The effects of treatment are measured by observation of your pulse and tongue and your personal feedback. Many patients report improved symptoms and an increased sense of well-being.

The number of acupuncture treatments required will depend on the seriousness of a condition, how long you have had it and your lifestyle and general health.  As part of the treatment, you will also be offered lifestyle and dietary advice to support your recovery.

What if I’m scared of needles?

Although the acupuncture needles are tiny, this can be daunting for some. I am also able to offer non-insertive treatments unique to Japanese style acupuncture.
